Coffee Shops & Supper Spots

Phil's Diner, a 1926 dining car called the oldest in California, opened beside the Lankershim depot in 1928 and is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Leon's Steak House and Coffee Shop opened at Victory and Vineland in 1945 and closed in July 2003. Don's in Burbank started as a drive-in in 1947 and closed in 2002.

Mike's Pizza in Panorama City was "serving since 1954" until 1993. The Jolly Roger served the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square under a linocut galleon, Rusty's Hacienda poured margaritas on Lankershim, and Encino Bowl kept a coffee shop next to the lanes from 1962 to 1986.

Each design comes from the place's own menu, ad or sign, with the old lettering traced wherever the source holds it.
